Life Stages of a Dog
Puppies are adorable but costs a lot of work. A puppy sleeps a lot, pies a lot, poops frequently, eat frequently and want to explore his world and will use all of his teeth. A puppy isn't good at being home alone and if he doesn't sleep, you need to have eyes in the back of your head to prevent him from doing things you don't want him to do. A puppy also needs to go out at night for urination, you need to calculate that the next specific period ahead, is largely dominated by your puppy.
A dog needs to be raised, none dog is born good. A puppy is developing rapidly from puppy to an adult. Each phase has it's own concerns. In puppy training you get in touch with owners of puppies of the same age with recognizable stories/ problems. The instructor will give you tools to deal with the problems of your puppy.
In the Netherlands we ask a lot from a dog. Your dog shouldn't use your shoes as toys, can't chew on the chair legs and he can't pee inside the house. We want to take the puppy for a ride, that the puppy is nice with cats , take him to a restaurant, take a visit at Grandma's. We want him quiet in the mall, friendly to strangers on the street and not being scared when they suddenly stroke his head. We don't want him pulling on the belt and calmly take a biscuit from our hands. We don't want him to take food from the sink and comes to you, when you call him.
For dogs who are very busy, fearful or aggressive to their environment is often a lonely life a head in the future and that makes no dog happier . There are many dog schools throughout the Netherlands and kennel clubs where you and your dog will learn the basics together and go on the road of trusting each other. When you get the taste of training, you can move on to all sorts of dog sports and games.
A dog goes through the following life stages:
Neonatal period:
Runs from birth to 2 weeks old. The puppy does essentially nothing but drinking, sleeping, staing warm. Eyes and ears are still closed, smell and touch is already developed. Important that you regularly pick up the puppy so that he get familiar with human fragrance.
Transitional period:
Runs from 2 weeks to 3 weeks old. The eyes and ears are open now, so more stimulation come from the environment, the puppy can walk and stand even better, start wagging. Around 19 days their eyes open and around 20 days, the teeth come trough.
Socialization first period:
Runs from 3 weeks to 12 weeks old. It is very important that the puppy during this period can learn everything and get used to what they later will be encountered with. These get used to it (socialization) to various experiences such as bus, train, car, bicycle, people, animals, children, etc. It is the period when the puppy becomes familiar with his:
1: immediate environment (family, his own kind) and familiarize yourself with it's
2: environment (sounds, animals, cars, trains, children, groomer, veterinarian, etc.).
With everything the puppy gets to know everything in a positive, not fearful way, the puppy will later on in his life consider and accept it as normal. Also during this period is the basis of the ranking. It is important now that the puppy is now learned what the rules in your house are and what their place in this is.
If you're going to get a puppy from the breeder the best time is from the seventh week to the eighth week. Then, the puppy stands still (mentally) and can be bonded very easily with his new boss, you will be if it were accepted as the new mother from the puppy.
Second socialization:
This is also called the fear phase. Runs from 12 weeks to 6 months. In this period include the ranking determined the dog is becoming more enterprising, will seek and break boundaries. It is very important that what you've learned and have trained and have earned his trust with your puppy in the first period (socialization) keep on going doing this. A solid foundation is very important. The puppies are very susceptible to traumatic experiences, avoid that if possible, protect the puppy the best you can .
Puberty:
Runs from 6 months to about 2 years. During this period, we dot the 'i'. Males begin to lift the leg when they urinate, females may be beginning to get heated (often in the period from 6 months to approximately 9 months). Until about 18 months the dog will grow, the bones are fully grown and will only develop the muscles more. The spiritual growth is in the Dobermann to about 3 years.
Letting the young dog jump as little as possible , walking the stairs, also walking beside the bicycle (bikes rule: number of months x 5: 4 6 months so a dog must: 6 x 5 = 30: =4= 7.5 minutes walk alongside the bike) slowly building it up. The pup should be approximately 2 months old for a 10 minutes walk, after that comes for every month the dog gets older 5 minutes longer. So if a dog is 6 months 6 x 5 = 30 minutes walking, so no long walks in the woods or on the beach, trough the dunes, and don't take an hour to go to the market or city, these impressions are too much for a puppy / young dog, they can't handle it mentally. You might better visit the city everyday for 5 a 10 minutes then 1 time a week for an hour.
Adult period:
For litllte breeds this is around the age arround 1 a 2 year old en for a large breed 2 a 3 years en giant breeds even later. If the dog is well socialized principles are fixed and it is now difficult to learn the dog new things. Your dog can still learn things, you need to be more patience and it wil take a lot more time to achive your goal.
Age period:
This period can be from around the 7 years till 10 this is all decided bij the size of the dog, this can greatly change. During the old ages the body is physically less. There may be behavioral changes. Keep your dog active as long as possible, adapted to the level / age of the dog.
