The Purchase of a Dog
If you decide to take a dog whether it is for a Doberman or any other random race, it's always smart to first find out information. This may, for example through internet or by a purebred dog breeders recommended by the association of the breed you want to buy.
For an indicative purchase prices look here: huisdierenprijzen. ( This site is in the Dutch language).
Of course there are some aspects that are very important. For example: how big are they gonna get, what are the characteristics of the variety, common diseases and the energy the dog needs. It is not wise if you're an older person, to get your self a young and energetic dog, or, a dog that needs a firm hand when yourself are very sweet and gentle. Nor is it sensible when you have physical complaints, for example when you've problem with your knees and take like a dog around the 60 pounds, but a smaller breed who weighs less. So you must first take a good look at yourself before you purchase a dog, these problems can be avoided if you consider this wit yourself.

Looking for a Dog
If you have yoyrself good informated is it important to consider what kind of dog you want. Which way you choose both chosses have advantage has its drawbacks.
You should always observe the following things:
Dobermans are bred in two directions:
* Working Bloodline:
This is a dog that is born to work and full of energy ready to go.
* Show Bloodline:
These are dogs that are bred for the shows, calmer (often easier home, garden and kitchen Dobermann)
Want a house, garden and kitchen Dobermann don't tak a Dobermann e from a workline but from a show line.
Want to start training or other activities ( for sports or active people) then take a Doberman from a workline and not from a showline.

Option 1
A puppy: take one from a reputable breeder that is affiliated with a breed club of the variety.
If you do get a puppy from a reputable breeder you may assume that they are in possession of a pedigree and they have bin checked on the well-known for the variety illnesses that come with the race.
The advantage of a puppy from a breeder / kennel:
You can educate a Puppy as you like. Socialization, and the commands are easy in a stage puppy. These are the guiding principles for a dog for the rest of his / her life.
The disadvantages are:
That a lot of time goes in de eduction of your puppy. U must fallow courses "which I think a dog is never too old for a course / training / sports". A puppy socialsation can be very much an good workout.

Option 2
Second change dogs: This one maycome from a acquaintance or from a friend but also froma shelter or a foundation.
For Dobermanns froma foundation see Doberman Rescue they can give you professional help in negotiating between your new future friend and they are objectively on the sidelines of your first meetings. and see more than you at first time because when you are 1 on 1 you with your dog its often that you are so happy you miss seeying things. If you live in Belgium, you can take a look at Dobermann Passion.
The advantage of a second change:
That they often are already trained or at least some of the dog know there basic commands and is are often already housebroken. The dog has the basics already received them in his / her puppy years.
Disadvantages are:
However, that "another man's problems" can also come with the dog this may not be the case but it could happen. The dog is not socialized with cats, he probably can not coexist in the home with cats. So go as often as you can g to see if it clicks between you and your family , if everything is okay or you will run into problems and are there problems., remember if you are able to turn to the resources to fix this. The dog is already socialized and re-socializing takes time, effort and energy.

Character of the Dobermann
A dog with character thats how the Dobermann sure can be describe, but that can sometimes give problems .A dog with a character is not what is called a follower and let his character often do the talking for him.
Giving you the things in a Doberman's head are getting out of difficult and often goes its own way.
Because of this character a Doberman tries to provoke often your skills as a packleader. And wil provoke this again and again and this breed continues to constantly surprise you by his intellingence.
This is due to the Doberman high intelligence, which the dog always tries to outsmart you.
Especially the first two years of the raising of a Doberman puppy will not be easy but expired by this character, why the action of the owner to act consistently is very important.
The consistency of the owner, will change the profoking from your into a place for fun. But if the Dobermann doesn't recognize it's owner, you would wish never started with this breed. That's why once again consistent action of the owner is a must for a Doberman. It is important to realize that Louis Dobermann used all kinds of dogs took to create the perfect watch-and guard dog breed.

Education
It will be clear by now, that not everyone is able to raise a Dobermann. The dog has a very obstinate character, and that requires a very consistent performance. As described above.
When the puppy comes to your home the upbringing begins immediately, the Dobemann recognizes quickly links because the Dobermann is very smart and resourceful it will often push you to the limit. The Doberman can easily abuse you, if you act inconsistently. You will when you see a puppys big eyes think 'oh so sweet, oh those eyes the will learn that when they grow older ".
It's the first negative step in educating your Doberman puppy, of course your puppy needs effection/love but more importantly, movement, listening and then show effection/love. Your no, is just no and your Doberman can't change that. What you even should consider is the size and the weight an adult Dobermann can get.A puppy is sweet as a lapdog but when he / she is an adult of 60 pound it isn't, so always consider what you teach a Dobermann puppy he / she always can do if the dog is mature. So make from the very first day clear what your puppy can and cann't, and maintains this consistently. It is always better ffor a Dobermann positive punishment than negative one, but I guess that goes for every breed and race.

Caring
A Doberman needs movement, it is a dog that needs a good condition. It is a wonderful dog to jog, swim, bike or just to skaten. So a Dobermann isn't satisfied with a walk around a small block. What for the coat requires, a Doberman isn't much work .Als they sit in the moulting period, they have even little care, sometimes you need a rubber glove with studs on their fur to be removed so the dead and loose hair. 1 or 2 times a week is plenty. Alwayscheck the ear if is its clean and if the teeth are clean of tartar and dental plaque.
Don't leave a Doberman to long in the snow or in direct sunlight or heat for playing or walking. Because of his thinning coat a Dobermann is very sensitive.
Check always the pads of a Doberman paws after this they might show cracks.

Below common disease in Dobermann
Cardiomyopathy:
Presumably this is a hereditary disease.
Several research institutes are researcgib this.
An echocardiogram of the heart can prove this condition.
A negative result does not mean that the disease can't develop in the future.
Hip Dysplasia:
May be hereditary.
When you talk about HD A (HD-Fri) B (the old TC), C (is + / -, and D (is HD +).
The hips of both parents must be monitored to minimize inheritance.
PHTVL / PHPV:
Inherited disorder.
In the raise of the dog the blood vessels feed the eyes development.
If these blood vessels doesn't disappear after developing a waste accumulates behind the ball lens.
This condition is expressed in degrees.
Doubtful, first grade and grade 2 to 6.
In severe cases there may be an operation to be considered.
More severe forms may be operated, with half of the cases a positive result is achieved.
Hypothyroidism:
Is probably hereditary.
Makes too little thyroid hormones for proper metabolism.
This disorder can be treated with thyroid hormone tablets.
The hormonelevel should be checked regularly.
If there are antibodies (T4) to create against the tablets the "Hashimoto's Disease" can develop.
Von Willebrand disease:
This is an inherited blood disorder with persistent bleeding.
Only the asexual chromosome.
The test for this disease, ELISA test, requires preparation.
There should be no stress, the bitch is not in heat or pregnant.
Further, the dog is not vaccinated are less than 14 days.
Recently there is also a DNA test but the same rules.
The test determined only whether a dog is a carrier is and not whether he is unwell.
Wobbler Syndrome:
This syndrome could be inherited.
Dogs suffer from pressure on the spinal cord.
This may be due to a deformed or unstable cervical spine.
An extreme example can express itself in paralysing of the legs.
Stretching and pressing on the head can give pain.
Surgery is still under discussion. Treated dogs sometimes come back for the same condition.
Atrophy:
This retinal disease is hereditary.
The visual acuity decreases.
First in the dark and ultimately in the daylight.
It can take from months to years until complete blindness.
Dogs can be tested.
Albinism:
White Doberman breeding programs should be kept off.
But parents should be removed from breeding.
These have the white factor in their genes.
In America it is possible to request a list of Doberman's that this factor have.
There exists a pedigree with an AKC certificate.
In this pedigree, the colors of all the dogs there.
So the breeder can prove that there is no white line in the genes.

Insurance??
Any dog can bring harm to other people's property, so always ask your liability insurance if the dog are automatically insured. Isn't this the case do this your self. This will avoid unpleasant incidents in the future.
Further, the costs can run high at the vet for a dog if he / she has a broken leg, inflammation at the uterus, stomachtilt, or have swallowed something wrong. You can assure this so, that you only pay for the 19% of the bill.
Often, ED and HD are not reimbursed and the cost to yourself.
Elbow (abbreviated SAD) is a disorder that frequently occurs in dogs. ED is a collective term of five disorders that may occur at an elbow joint and can give totally or half lameness. The disorders can occur independently, but it is often that multiple diseases simultaneously start in an elbow joint.
Hip Dysplasia (HD) is a disease in which too much slack in the hip joint, resulting in a deformity of the hip joint can occur. Heupdysptasie is not only found in dogs and cats but also in humans. Dogs with hip dysplasia are mainly the larger and medium-sized dog breeds, in most cases (93%) are in both hips affected. HD, but sometimes only in one hip joint.
